The course equips students with basic knowledge of tools, equipment and sewing techniques in garment construction.

Course Description

The course equips students with basic knowledge of tools, equipment and sewing techniques in garment construction. Other topics include functions and storage of tools and equipment, stitches and seams, edge finishes, arrangement of fullness, openings and fastenings, fabric types and layouts, the significance of the grain, laying and cutting seams, open, overlaid, canal/slot, and double stitches.

Duration: 12 Months

Course Objectives

At the end of the semester students will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain how to choose, use and maintain various tools and equipment that are employed for garment construction
  2. Acquire knowledge and develop basic skills in the construction of stitches and seams.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and skill in the construction of facings, collars, lapels, sleeves, pockets
  4. Demonstrate knowledge and skill in fabric layout, cutting and sewing of actual garments.

Course Content

Topics to be covered in this course include;

    • Knowledge and description of the basic tools, materials and equipment for sewing.
    • Significance of the grain
    • Types of sewing machine
    • Stitches and seams.
    • Disposal of fullness
    • Types of openings and appropriate fastenings for different openings.
    • Identification different edge finishes and how to make them
    • Making of simple blouses, skirts, and trousers with bands, closure, pockets, sleeves, collars.

Mode of Delivery

The course will be implemented through lectures, discussions, and practical exercises which will be conducted in workshop settings within and outside school premises.
