Pattern Drafting

This course aims at equipping the student with the basic technical knowledge and skills in pattern technology. In addition, the student will be introduced to some materials, tools and equipment needed for pattern making.

Course Description

This course aims at equipping the student with the basic technical knowledge and skills in pattern technology. In addition, the student will be introduced to some materials, tools and equipment needed for pattern making. Emphasis will be placed on block patterns, body measurement, pattern markings, symbols, design analysis and dart manipulation, adapting simple garment types and features, and patterns for bodices/blouses.

Duration: 6 Months

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the rudiments of patterns, types of patterns and various ways of producing patterns
  • Apply and demonstrate the knowledge in taking of body measurements to draft basic block patterns and make dress patterns for children, women and men.
  • Mark and label patterns accurately and neatly.
  • Adapt and repurpose an existing design pattern for various necklines, sleeves, collars and bodice blocks.
  • Manipulate darts of the basic block to obtain new designs.
  • Adapt and repurpose an existing design to produce alternative patterns for blouses/shirts.

  • Dart Manipulation – pivot and slash methods
  • Dart Equivalent – Seam lines and fullness
  • Creating the Basic Pattern Block
  • Adapting for simple garment types and features
  • Adapting for the construction of the following:
  • Necklines, designing their shapes and patterns
  • Sleeves – Basic, types, parts and functions
  • Collars – Parts, their functions, basic types
  • Bodice blocks – Design analysis, dart manipulation and yoke styles 

Mode of Delivery

This course will be implemented through lectures, discussions, and practical exercises which will be conducted in workshop settings.
