BTech Fashion Design Technology Curriculum

Our Fashion Design curriculum provides an overview of what you will study in each semester.

Semester One

FDT 111 Introduction to Fashion (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips the student with contextual and historical background of the fashion industry. It emphasizes the scope, major operations and core activities of the fashion and clothing industry.

FDT 112 Introduction to Textile Design (2 Credit Hours)

This course enables students to acquire knowledge and skills in adding appropriate colours and patterns to textiles. It addresses the creative and innovative needs of the students and makes it possible for them to understand and effectively create their own designs on textiles.

FDT 113 Pattern Making (3 Credit Hours)

The course aims at equipping students with basic technical knowledge and skills in body measurement taking and drafting of patterns.  It also identifies materials, tools and equipment needed for the purpose.

FDT 114 Sewing Techniques (3 Credit Hours)

The course equips students with basic knowledge in tools and equipment and basic sewing techniques in garment construction. It enables students to work in the industry under healthy conditions and handle different kinds of tools and equipment with efficiency. It builds confidence for the various courses in garment manufacturing.

FDT 115 Introduction to Textiles (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips the student with in-depth knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, products and skills of the textile industry.  It emphasizes fibre studies and the processing of staple fibres into yarn.

ACDT 114 Basic Drawing (3 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with the skills and techniques of using lines to represent objects, ideas, moods and capturing images. It emphasizes freehand drawing and enables students to observe more critically and to handle different kinds of media with efficiency. These help to build a more solid foundation for the various courses in the programme.

ACDT 115 African Art & Culture (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with knowledge and skills that make them aware of their own history, customs and traditions (practices and beliefs) as well as those from various African cultures, as forms of art, which have influence on the Ghanaian society. Students identify historical backgrounds to fashion/textile designs and their relevance to current trends. It enables the Ghanaian fashion/textile designer to possess a good understanding of African Societies in order to fully appreciate the true meaning of the art developed by these various African Societies.

ACDT 116 Communication and Study Skills I (2 Credit Hours)

This course seeks to give students a firm foundation in the ability to use effective communication skills for academic work and to be able to show mastery of the spoken language as well as the skills needed in the presentation of information.

ACDT 117 Introduction to Computer I (2 Credit Hours)

This course introduces students to the large field of Information Communication Technology (ICT). It emphasizes the general concept of computing, the classifications, operations and functions of the computer system, while gaining a fair understanding of the use of Microsoft Office software packages. It equips students with knowledge and skills in operating the computer as a drawing, designing and presentation tool. This will also enable students to perform various tasks using a combination of software programmes such as Word, Photoshop, and PowerPoint.

Semester Two

FDT 121 Introduction to Creative Design in Fashion (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with basic skills and knowledge to explore their environment, create new garment patterns and innovate existing patterns into contemporary designs that will satisfy the social needs of the society.

FDT 122 Textile Design (2 Credit Hours)

This course continues to address the creative and innovative needs of the student. It equips the student with knowledge and skills that enable him/her to effectively design or register ideas on paper, which must then be transferred to fabric through appropriate fabric decorative processes.

FDT 123 Pattern Adaptation (3 Credit Hours)

This course aims at equipping students with the basic knowledge and skills in creating and adapting simple patterns for bodices/blouses. It shall include necklines, sleeves, collars and bodice blocks.

FDT 124 Garment Construction (3 Credit Hours)

This course is a continuation of FDT 114. It aims at equipping students with further knowledge and skills in garment construction that include fabric layout and cutting as well as machine operation. 

FDT 125 Freehand Cutting (3 Credit Hours)

The course equips students with knowledge and skills in direct cutting techniques. Knowledge and skills acquired shall be used to undertake creative projects and patterns for children and adult wear.

FDT 126 Basic Design (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with further techniques and skills in freehand and mechanical drawing. It is meant primarily to build up creative abilities and tendencies in students and thereby let students develop their psychomotor, affective and cognitive skills. It encourages idea development and creativity using natural and man-made objects in the immediate environment. Emphasis is placed on creativity and deduction of images and designs from drawing assignments.   

ACDT 126 Communication and Study Skills II (2 Credit Hours)

This course provides students with enhanced knowledge and skills to communicate professionally on many levels including writing, speaking, conducting meetings, giving presentations and interpersonal dialogues, and using electronic media for their presentations.

ACDT 127 Introduction to Computer II (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with enhanced knowledge and skills in operating the computer as a drawing, designing and presentation tool. This will also enable students to perform various tasks using a combination of software programmes such as Word, Photoshop, and PowerPoint and specialised software for fashion/textile CAD activities.

*** WEL 121 Industrial Attachment I

The aim of the course is to equip students with practical hands-on knowledge and skills in a factory, large or small-scale enterprise within the fashion industry. Students shall necessarily be placed in areas suitable for apprenticeship as trainees from an academic fashion training institute. 

WEL 121 (Industrial Attachment I)

The aim of the course is to equip students with practical hands-on knowledge and skills in a factory, large or small-scale enterprise within the fashion industry. Students shall necessarily be placed in areas suitable for apprenticeship as trainees from an academic fashion training institute.  The objective of this placement shall be to correct their deficiencies, polish and equip them with the relevant skills that they require for their individual levels of training. The major activities of their training shall therefore, include, exposure to various tools and equipment, various raw materials, garment design, fashion illustration, fashion construction, finishing, and operation of different types of machinery. 

Placement in such establishments after the 1st year, for at least a three (3) -month on-the-job apprenticeship, is required. Students will embark on this activity during the vacation of the first semester. The period of attachment shall be supervised by representatives of both AUCDT and industry.

Students must be given orientation on industrial rules and regulations that include their industrial set-up, health and safety, human relations, noisemaking, punctuality, oath of secrecy, etc., prior to the commencement of the training. Students shall present a written report and an employer’s confidential report of their apprenticeship placement for assessment after the period of training.

Semester Three

FDT 231 Creative Design in Fashion (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with skills and knowledge to identify and investigate quality indigenous or existing fashion designs. It will enable students to prepare and apply major findings to innovate and create new products.

FDT 232 Printed Textile Design Application (3 Credit Hours)

This course equips the student with knowledge and skills in the creation of various forms of printed textiles. It shall emphasise the step-by-step processes of textile design and application of approved designs on textiles.

FDT 233 Pattern Technology I (3 Credit Hours)

The course aims at equipping students with knowledge and skills in producing patterns for garment construction. Emphasis shall be placed on lingerie, pants, elaborate necklines and draping designs.

FDT 234 Garment Technology I (3 Credit Hours)

The course aims at equipping students with deeper knowledge and skills in various garment construction processes.

FDT 235 Introduction to Fabric Studies (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips the student with knowledge of various types of fabrics, their processes of construction, properties and main characteristics. Emphasis will be placed on woven fabrics as the main source of material for locally manufactured garments.

FDT 236 Fashion Illustration (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with knowledge and practical skills in art forms that are generally referred to as fashion illustration. It enables the students to freely express their ideas with various drawing tools including a variety of computer software programmes on paper as a preliminary step in creating their fashionable collections.

FDT 237 Basic Computer Aided Design (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with enhanced knowledge and skills in operation of the computer as a drawing and designing media for fashion/textile activities.

FDT 238 Introduction to Fashion Accessories (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with basic knowledge and skills in identifying objects that can be used as fashion accessories. It goes further to enable students explore their environments for indigenous and contemporary natural and man-made objects that can be used as fashion accessories.

FDT 239 Introduction to Production Management (2 Credit Hours)

This course provides introductory views of managerial factors which influence day-to-day operation of a fashion factory. It is designed to assist students in understanding the processes and benefits of effective management as a means to efficiency and proper sustenance of a business. Students will acquire general management skills that will help them to recognise and organise physical and financial resources needed to run a venture.

Semester Four

FDT 241 Basic Fashion Design and Illustration (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with skills and knowledge that enable students to use the fashion design process to create original fashion design. It will also make it possible for students to brainstorm through effective illustration of fashion activities including drawing and illustrating with the human figure.

FDT 242 Pattern Technology II (3 Credit Hours)

The course aims at equipping students with the deepening of knowledge and skill in adapting patterns for draped designs/styles and jackets/coats. Emphasis is placed on good finishing and quality control measures. 

FDT 243 Garment Technology II (3 Credit Hours)

The course aims at equipping students with deeper knowledge and skills in garment construction that will help to minimise errors, improve dexterity, and increase speed of production to approved factory standards.

FDT 244 Fabric Studies (2 Credit Hours)

This course is a continuation of Fabric studies I. It equips the student with further knowledge of different types of fabrics that include laces, velvets, piles, felts and those made from other fibres such as rayon, nylon, linen, silk, etc. Additionally, this is made up of the effective application of colour to the purified fabric through various dyeing processes.

FDT 245 Millinery Design and Production (1 Credit Hour)

This course equips students with basic knowledge and skills in producing millinery items such as hats, fascinators and other head coverings.  It also enables students to explore their drawing skills to design and produce fashionable head coverings from various types of fabrics.

FDT 246 Computer Aided Design (2 Credit Hours)

This course enhances knowledge and skills in operating the computer as a drawing, designing and presentation tool. This will also enable students to perform various tasks using a combination of software such as Microsoft Word, Photoshop, and Microsoft PowerPoint for various fashion/textile activities.

FDT 247 Fashion Marketing (2 Credit Hours)

The course provides knowledge and skills to students on the meaning, basic technicalities and process of marketing goods and services, especially those related to fashion products.

FDT 248 Production Management (2 Credit Hours)

This course provides enhanced knowledge and skills of views of managerial factors which influence day-to-day operation of a fashion/textile factory.

*** WEL 242 Industrial Attachment II

The aim of the course is to equip students with further practical knowledge and skills in the fashion industry or any related established small-scale fashion and textile enterprise. Students shall necessarily be placed in areas suitable for apprenticeship as trainees from an academic fashion training institute. 

WEL 242 (Industrial Attachment – Workplace Experience Learning) II 

The aim of the course is to equip students with further practical knowledge and skills in the fashion industry or any related established small-scale fashion and textile enterprise.  Students shall necessarily be placed in areas suitable for apprenticeship as trainees from an academic fashion training institute.  The objective of this placement shall be to correct their deficiencies, polish and equip them with the relevant skills that they require for their individual levels of training. The major activities of their training shall therefore, include, exposure to various tools and equipment, various raw materials, garment design, fashion illustration, fashion construction, finishing, and operation of different types of machinery.

Placement in such establishments after the second (2nd) year for, at least, three (3) months on-the-job apprenticeship is required. Students will embark on this activity during the vacation of the first semester. Students embark on viable simple research projects in industry as an integral requirement for the award of the Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Degree in Fashion Design Technology. The period of attachment shall be supervised by representatives of both AUCDT and industry.

Students shall present a written report and an employer’s confidential report of their apprenticeship placement for assessment after the period of training.

Semester Five

FDT 351 Design and Illustration (3 Credit Hours)

This course is a continuation of FDT 241 (Basic Fashion Design and Illustration). It equips students with enhanced knowledge and practical skills in the fashion design and illustration process. It makes use of Photoshop and other computer drawing software for creating fashion/textile design and illustration activities.

FDT 352 Garment Decoration Techniques (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with creative and innovative knowledge and skills to effectively decorate garments. Garment decoration improves the aesthetics and final value of textiles. It contains a variety of techniques that are also avenues for future job opportunities for students and graduates.

FDT 353 Pattern Alteration (2 Credit Hours)

This course aims at equipping students with the knowledge and skills in adjusting patterns for figure problems.

FDT 354 Fashion Draping (3 Credit Hours)

The course aims at equipping students with knowledge and skill in adapting patterns for draped styles or designs on the dummy. It enables students to observe more critically and deepen their knowledge in pattern making.

FDT 355 Design and Production of Bags and Slippers (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with enhanced knowledge and skills in designing and producing bags and slippers. Emphasis is placed on the technicalities that enable the design and construction of various types of bags and slippers.

FDT 356 Entrepreneurship I (2 Credit Hours)

This course provides basic knowledge and skills in entrepreneurship. They will also acquire skills that will help them to create and sustain their own businesses.

FDT 357 Seminar in Fashion (2 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with the knowledge and skills of the rudiments of academic oral presentation. It enables students to express themselves orally by giving educative talk based on fashion/textiles. Students should research on approved topics, compile data, synthesise the data into chronological material and do oral presentation to an audience that includes fellow students, teachers, technicians and invited personnel from the relevant industry. At the end of each talk the floor would be opened for meaningful contributions from the audience. The corrected report should be presented for assessment after an approved period.

Semester Six

WEL 363 (Industrial Attachment – Workplace Experience Learning) III 

The aim of the course is to equip students with enhanced practical knowledge and skills in the fashion and textile industry. Students shall necessarily be placed in areas suitable for apprenticeship as trainees from an academic fashion training institute.  The objective of this placement shall be to correct their deficiencies, polish and equip them with the relevant skills that they require for their levels of training. The major activities of their training shall therefore, include, exposure to various modern tools and equipment, various raw materials, high quality garment design and construction processes, fashion illustration, good finishing, quality control processes, management practices, entrepreneurial practices, and operation of different types of machinery, especially those with computer-aided and digital processing.

Placement in such establishment in the second (2nd) semester of the third (3rd) year for a whole semester of sixteen (16) weeks on-the-job apprenticeship is required for the award of the Bachelor of Technology (B-Tech) Degree in Fashion Design Technology. Supervisors, both in AUCDT and the relevant industry shall ensure that students embark on intensive practical training relevant to their study and engage in viable research projects during this period of workplace experience learning.

The period of attachment shall be supervised by representatives of both AsanSka University College and industry. Students shall present a written report and an employer’s confidential report of their apprenticeship placement for assessment after the period of training.

FDT 362 Research Methods/Seminars (3 Credit Hours)

This course equips students with enhanced skills and knowledge of research methodology and academic presentation. It enables students to conduct better research in preparation towards their final project in the following semester.  Students should research on approved topics, compile data, synthesize the data into a chronological material and do a presentation to an audience that includes fellow students, teachers, technicians and invited personnel from the relevant industry. Where the talks involve analysis, students should be able to show such skill. At the end of each talk the floor should be opened for meaningful questions, criticisms and contributions from the audience. Students would be given a deadline for submission of final report for assessment after the corrections have been completed.

Semester Seven

FDT 471 Collection Development (5 Credit Hours)

The course covers evaluation and sampling of designs from pattern drafting, toiling, clothing designs, millinery and accessories from previous semesters.

FDT 472 Quality Control in Garment Production (2 Credit Hours)

The course aims at equipping students with knowledge and skills in high competence and speed required by the fashion/textile industry. Emphasis is placed on high technical competence (accuracy and comprehensiveness), good finishing and speed in the production of garments.

FDT 473 Beauty Culture (3 Credit Hours)

This course introduces students to the line of professionalism in the beauty industry. It equips students with knowledge, skills and creativity in a wide range of techniques related to beauty. Emphasis is placed on skin care, bridal and ordinary make-up, nail art and hair styling.

FDT 474 Entrepreneurship II (2 Credit Hours)

This course provides enhanced knowledge and skill in entrepreneurship. Students will also acquire skills that will help them to create and sustain their own businesses and business partnerships.

FDT 475 Thesis/Project I (3 Credit Hours)

This course builds on the knowledge and skills provided by courses related to research methodology. It requires students to demonstrate the ability to research on a problem in fashion and textiles and come out with a thesis (theoretical) or a project in the form of an original object (invention) with a report, which may include the design and construction of the product(s), tool(s) (equipment) or machine, which would help in the promotion of fashion production. The final object may be a prototype or a fully functioning object. Students will be required to send a break-down of the first part of their research project proposals made up of the first three (3) chapters to their respective supervisors for criticisms and corrections by the close of the semester.  

Semester Eight

FTD 481 Final Collection Development (5 Credit Hours)

This is a continuation of FDT 471 (Collection Development). It gives students the opportunity to evaluate and sample and display knowledge and skills acquired in pattern drafting, toiling, clothing designs, millinery and accessories during the four (4) years of the programme in the form of an exhibition of creative designs and products.

FDT 482 Portfolio Development and Exhibition (5 Credit Hours)

The course shall enable students to apply the knowledge and skills acquired within the programme to create a portfolio of various works, some of which must be exhibited in addition to the final project work for assessment.

FDT 483 Salesmanship and Sales Management (2 Credit Hours)

The course shall equip students with knowledge and skills of salesmanship and sales management.

FDT 484 Fashion Merchandising (3 Credit Hours)

The course provides knowledge and skills to students on the methods, practices and operations used to promote and sustain various activities of the fashion industry. The process makes it possible to arrange all the required raw materials and ensures that goods produced will be affordable and desired by the target market and consumers in good time.

FDT 485 Thesis/Project II (3 Credit Hours)

This course builds on the knowledge and skills provided by FDT 475, Project I. Students will be required to finalise their research project and submit them periodically to their respective supervisors for criticisms and corrections.  Students will be given deadlines for submission and assessment after prior approval of completion by the supervisor(s).
